Basic Introduction

Q/R
Quote- from the text
Rhetorical Question- a question you don't have to answer.

T- Title- The Merchant of Venice
A- Arthur- William Shakespeare
K- Key Argument- A key argument that shocked the reader was when Antonio agreed to forfeit a pound of flesh to Shylock if he didn't repay his bond.
O- Outline- The 3 things you are going to write about.
Red, White and Blue sentence. he was willing to die for money to give Bassanio. Shylock & Antonio hate each other. Shylock didn't show mercy.

"If you wrong us, shall we not revenge?! (Shakespeare-Shylok) Have you ever felt like taking revenge? In William Shakespeare 'The Merchant of Venice' a key moment that shocked the reader was when Antonio agreed to forfeit a pound of flesh to Shylock if he didn't repay his bond. This moment was shocking, outrageous and fascinating. This moment was important to the text as a whole because Shylock and Antonio didn't like each other but still agreed on the bond, Antonio was willing to risk his life for Bassanio, and Shylock did not show mercy in claiming his bond.

Basic Body Paragraph x3

P-Point- The moment when Antonio agreed to the bond was shocking because Shylock and Antonio didn't get along.
E-Evidence- Antonio was a Merchant and Shylock made a living lending people money with interest. While Shylock charged interest, Antonio lent money without interest and scorned Shylock for doing so. He also spat at Shylock and called him "cut through dog."
E-Example-
(How the evidence prove the point)
Therefore, the reader is shocked to discover Antonio and Shylock can come to an agreement about money lending. It is also shocking because when Shylock calls Antonio out for the way he teats him, Antonio tells Shylock that he will spit on him and call him a dog again. This treatment is not unusual among people who make arguments.
L-Link-(Link back to my key argument)
With treatment like this from Antonio towards Shylock, and a promise to be just as cruel in the future, it is shocking that they both agreed to the bond

The reader was shocked when the reader read this part because of Antonio and Bassanio a really good friends in reality but who would put their lives in sacrifice for his best friend.

Antonio was willing to die for Bassanio because of Antonio new that he could pay back the money on the day of the bond with his money on his ships. Antonio was confident because he thought nothing bad would happen while Antonio's ships were sailing around the world. Bassanio neede money from Antonio but Antonio had no money on him so he made a bond with Shylock saying he will pay him back and if he doesn't have the money he will offer a pound of flesh.

Mirror Conclusion-Takol

T- Title- The Merchant of Venice

In William Shakespeare 'The Merchant of Venice,' a key moment that shocked the reader was when Antonio agreed to a bond of flesh if he couldn't pay back Shylock. This was shocking because Antonio hated Shylock and promised to mistreat him the future. Antonio was willing to die for Bassanio even though he begged him not to take the risk. Finally, because Shylock had never shown mercy and did not at the trial. For this reason's it is clear that this moment was shocking to the reader.

Was Bassanio right to give away the ring, give reasons for your thinking?
No, he should have denied because he promised his wife he is not taking it out until death.

The reason why cause Hitler was always ordering people and always being selfish. These are my opinions on what I think about dictators.

Machant of Venice (Act 4 Scene 2 and Shylock Character Study #2)

What invitation does Portia refuse and why?

She refuses to go to dinner with Bassanio. She does it because she and Nerissa had to go back to Belmont to arrive there before their husbands.

What does Nerissa plan to get, why do you think this is important?
She plans to get her husband's ring.

Do you admire Portia after these scenes, or do you find her actions cruel? Use examples to support your thinking.
I really still admire her the same as I did at the start. I think she has a good mindset and she's brave. So she's fine.

Shylock Character Study #2

How does he behave when he thinks he is winning?
Shylock acts childish.

Is his behavior what you expected of him based on the story so far?
Yeah, I guess because Shylock has acted similarly in other situations.

Why do lines 40-46 offer a particularly chilling comparison? What is Shylock saying?
Shylock says "You'll ask me why I rather choose to have A weight of carrion flesh than to receive Three thousand ducats. I'll not answer that But say it is my humor. Is it answered? What if my house is troubled with a rat And I be pleased to give ten thousand ducats To have it banded? What, are you answered yet?" On spark notes, it translates too...
"You're going to ask me why I'd rather have a pound of decaying flesh than three thousand ducats. I won't answer that. Let's just say it's because I feel like it. Is that enough of an answer? What if I had a rat in my house, and I felt like paying ten thousand ducats to have it exterminated? Do you have your answer yet."

How does Shylock react when he becomes the victim?
He becomes very helpless with what is happening.

Mrchant of Venice(Act 4 Scene 1 and Line Study)

What does the Duke believe Antonio intends to do?
He believes Antonio is going to show Shylock mercy.

What does Shylock intend to do?
To receive his pound of flesh from Antonio.

Why must this law be allowed to stand (why can't the judge dismiss this case)?
Because if this bond is overruled it would threaten the legal security in Venice.

Shylock is very clear about the restrictions in the wording of the deed. How does Portia use these loopholes?
Portia found and used three loopholes- the first being no blood is to be spilled or else his land will be confiscated. The second is that Shylock is not to take more or less than the agreed pound of flesh or his land would be confiscated. The third is that any foreign person who attempts to murder someone in Venice would have half of his possessions given to the victim and half to the state.

What penalties does Shylock now have to pay? Are they fair?
Shylock now has to have half of his possessions taken and given to Antonio and the other half was given to the state of Venice. They are fair because Shylock did break the law.

How do Lorenzo and Jessica gain by the result?
Antonio said that he would go along with Shylock's punishments as long as his money was put in a trust to give to Lorenzo and Jessica. The pair receive a large sum of money due to this.

What reward has Portia claimed and why is this significant?
She claimed the wedding ring of her husband, the ring that Bassanio agreed not to ever lose or give away.

Portia tells Shylock 'the quality of mercy is not strained'. How does she try to persuade Shylock to show mercy, how much mercy is she willing to show him?
Portia makes a long speech about mercy, quoting, "No one shows mercy because he has to."She is willing for mercy.

Act Four, Scene One- Line Study

Antonio gives us three short images of how useless any attempt by Bassanio to save his life will be...

What are they?
Antonio says "You may question with the wolf Why he hath made the ewe bleat for lamb; You may as well forbid the mountain pines To wag their high tops and to make no noise When they are fretten with the gusts of heaven; You may as well do anything most hard As seek to soften that-than which what's harder.

What do they tell us about one of Shakespeare's interests?
I think that he likes nature.

Do you think this is an effective way of demonstrating the problem?

I think that this was a good part Antonio said because it showed a picture in your head of what he said and I think that's what Shakespeare wanted us to see and feel like it was part of us.

Shylock uses vivid comparisons when he wants to make a point.

What example does he use to illustrate the fact that the pound of flesh is his: ‘tis mine and I will have it’
Shylock uses terrible living conditions to compare what he was saying.

It is much longer comparison than the three used by Antonio but do you think it is more striking/effective/convincing?
I think it is because he is relating to Antonio more.

Merchant Of Venice(Act 3 Scene 5)

In his jokey conversation with Jessica, why is Launcelot against the conversion of Jews to Christianity?
Because Christians already have enough of their own people, and new Christians will make the price of what they already have, such as bacon, go up.

What is Jessica's opinion of Portia?
Portia must have made a good impression on Jessica because she likes her extremely well, deeming Bassanio as blessed to have her as his wife.

Merchant Of Venice (Act3 Scene 4)

What is Lorenzo's opinion of Antonio?
I think his opinion is that Antonio is a faithful gentleman whose life will not only benefit him but also Portia and Bassanio.

What does Portia tell Lorenzo she intends to do?
Portia intents to send the money to Antonio with no regrets.

What does she ask Lorenzo and Jessica to do for her and why?
She asks that if Lorenzo and Jessica can manage the house until Bassanio comes back.

Why does Portia think Antonio and Bassanio must be alike?
Because they are best friends and best friends must have lots of things in common to be that close.

Why do Portia and Nerissa intend to travel dressed as men?
They said they were going to the monastery when in reality they were to go to the court and help Antonio.

How does Portia describe the behavior of young men?
She explains that they walk with manly stride, wear their swords gracefully, talk about their fights manliness proudly and exaggerate about their talks with ladies.

Does it seem likely that Portia is going to obey the expected behavior of a wife?
No, because she is willing to help out her husband and friends herself rather than Bassanio helping himself like what would be expected of him.

Merchant Of Venice (Act3 Scene 3)

Antonio is now convinced that he knows the reason for Shylock’s insistence on claiming his bond. What is it, use quotes from the text to support your answer.
he seeks my life, his reason I well know.

Why can the Duke not ‘deny the course of law’ according to Antonio?
because that would threaten the security of all foreign merchants in Venice.

What does Antonio seem resigned to his fate? What two important realizations is this based on?
because Antonio let others escape Shylock's bond.
If the judge lets Antonio off, he has to let everyone out.

Do you think Antonio’s feelings towards Bassanio have changed since the beginning, why?
yes, he had hope that Bassanio would pay him off but now he just hopes he will be there to see him die.

Shylock refuses to consider the idea of Mercy but demands Justice. Consider the following ideas:
Is mercy the same as forgiveness?
No

Is it easier to show mercy or look for revenge?
Its easier to show mercy

Is justice the same as fairness?
yes

Is true justice possible in this case?
no

If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you poison us, do we not die? And if you wrong us, do we not revenge? If we are like you in the rest, we will resemble you in that.'
This quote here that Shylock spoke means that both Shylock and the Christians have lessons to learn, before this play is over, about humanness and humility.
